Undergraduate Research Fellowship Award Recipients

August 27, 2020

Danica Miller received the Auvil Scholars Fellowship, in support of research, scholarship, and creative activity for undergraduate students in all majors, all campuses, and at all levels of undergraduate education. This fund was created by a 2006 gift from the estates of Grady and Lillie Auvil, Wenatchee tree-fruit entrepreneurs. Grady Auvil believed in the importance of education and research. He was instrumental in establishing the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission in 1968, and his work introduced many new fruits and innovations beneficial to growers. Throughout his life, he and his wife contributed generously to the WSU community, and this fund serves as a continuation of that legacy.

Dani, a senior in the Architecture program with a minor in Construction Management, has a passion for serving her community and has been with the ID+CL since the spring of 2020 as a research assistant, and the semester prior through an independent study. Highly involved at WSU through her major and sorority, Danica is a robust methodological researcher with an approachable and friendly attitude. Dani will be working with us on projects with NEEA’s Luminaire Level Lighting Controls (LLLC) program, as well as publishing her first manuscript in 2021. Additionally, Dani was successful in applying to and being accepted to present at WSU’s annual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) in 2020, although the event was canceled due to COVID.

Zakora Moore was selected as a recipient of an LSAMP Research Award. This award is for students at the WSU Pullman campus who are pursuing a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) discipline. The program serves students who are Native Alaskan/Native American, African American/Black, Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, and/or two or more races when mixed with any of these previously stated races. Applicants must have an overall 3.0 or higher GPA. Working with a faculty mentor conducting research in a STEM field, they must commit to a full academic year of working on a research project. Recipients are WSU LSAMP Fellows.

Zakora, a sophomore in Bio-Engineering joined the ID+CL team in the fall of 2019, working with us on journal articles, literature reviews, and like a sponge absorbing research methods along the way. Zakora is highly involved with the McNair Scholars program at WSU and wishes to pursue a graduate degree after a successful undergraduate record as a student researcher. Zakora helped with our Windsor Conference on Resilient Comfort in a Heating World 2020 paper, titled “Snuggies at work: Case study examples of thermal [dis]comfort, behaviors, and environmental satisfaction in the workplace, contributing greatly to the literature review in that manuscript. Additionally, Zakora was successful in applying to and being accepted to present at WSU’s annual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) in 2020 featuring her literature review work for the Snuggies paper, although the event was canceled due to COVID.

Congrats to Dani and Zakora!
